Radiofrequency Ablation for Neuromas
in New York City

Feelings of frequent burning in the ball of the foot or the sensation of a pebble in your shoe may be signs you have Morton’s neuroma, which is a painful foot condition caused by the inflammation of the nerves between the metatarsal bones behind the middle toes.

At Chelsea Foot and Ankle, our podiatrists prioritize conservative treatments, choosing minimally invasive procedures whenever possible before considering surgery. One such treatment is radiofrequency ablation (RFA), offered exclusively by our expert, Dr. Shastri. RFA is a groundbreaking option for treating Morton’s neuromas, delivering effective pain relief and positive results without the need for surgery.

What Is Radiofrequency Ablation?

Morton’s neuromas are sites of inflammation and swelling on the nerve between toe bones; rather than a tumor, a neuroma is actually a thickened nerve. Most conservative treatments involve relieving pressure and inflammation that cause discomfort and pain at the ball of the foot, such as special orthotics, NSAIDs, or corticosteroids.

Radiofrequency ablation, on the other hand, is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to treat neuromas and relieve pain long-term.

Call Chelsea Foot and Ankle at (646) 929-4149 in New York City to schedule a consultation with Dr. Shastri and see if you are a candidate for neuroma treatment with radiofrequency ablation.

How Does Radiofrequency Ablation Work?

This minimally invasive procedure utilizes electrical currents to heat up the nerve bundle and damage it. This process stops the nerve from sending pain signals to the brain, effectively eliminating discomfort associated with the neuroma.

During RFA, Dr. Shastri keeps the patient comfortable with a local anesthetic applied to the treatment area. Using ultrasound technology, she can accurately pinpoint where the neuroma is and uses a specialized probe to deliver radiofrequency energy to the affected nerve.

What Are the Benefits of Radiofrequency Ablation?

RFA for neuromas offers reliable results with a minimally invasive procedure, providing relief to patients. One of the primary advantages of RFA is it offers an in-between treatment for those who have not found success with conservative, noninvasive treatments and who are not quite ready for surgery. Other benefits of RFA for neuromas include:

  • Minimally invasive
  • Quick recovery
  • Precise treatment reduces trauma to the surrounding tissues
  • Short treatment time
  • No need for general anesthesia
  • High success rate

Am I a Candidate for Radiofrequency Ablation?

If you are suffering from neuromas and other conservative or noninvasive treatments have not helped you, you might be a candidate for RFA treatments. Additionally, candidates may be suffering from mild to moderate neuroma discomfort but are not ready to undergo surgery.

Radiofrequency Ablation FAQ

How long does the RFA procedure take?

It varies, but generally, the procedure is completed within an hour. The use of ultrasound to find the neuromas accurately speeds up the process compared to other methods.

What is recovery like after RFA?

Recovery after RFA treatment is generally much shorter and milder than invasive treatments. Once the anesthesia wears off, patients may experience a mild pain or burning sensation, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. On the day of your procedure, you can reduce swelling and discomfort by keeping your foot elevated and icing it. Most patients are fine to return to work the next day without using a surgical shoe or brace. Any residual discomfort, bruising, or swelling at the treatment site should be alleviated in approximately one to two weeks.
